JT Creative Update | 2023 Wrap-up
It’s that time of year! Time to see how productive (or unproductive) I was in the last one!
Written Work
Okay, so this was a big year for written stuff. The highlights:
self-published The Hollow Sun
got it entered into the Self-published Science Fiction Competition (third annual!)
Did not make it past the first round of cuts but got my first formal review of the book (here at EpicIndie.net) - in which the reviewer compared my work to that of Star Wars, Firefly, and The Expanse. I’ll gladly take it!
self-published A Slow Ship to Oblivion
converted my screenplays of Hydra One into prose and began edits with Cat
we are roughly 40% of the way through edits as of this moment.
converted my screenplay for SISTER into prose - now it is an 18k word novella titled A Goddess Trapped in Glass
finished my first feature-length screenplay in years (The Rocket Garden - discussed here)
Video
2023 was a big year for video at Subpixel, but here are the highlights:
This one was a few years in the making, as I’d begun interviewing folks for it all the way back in 2020, but only wrapped up the final video this year. It was a fun exploration through the depths of video game history! (Did you know they were making 3D games in the 70s????)
Runtime - 18:16
One of my more anticipated 2023 videogames was Starfield, and unfortunately it disappointed me so much that I made this absurdly long video about it. Buckle up with a drink and a snack if you want to hear me dive into what is essentially a literary analysis of this space exploration videogame.
Runtime - 42:58
Conversely, I was equally jazzed about 2023’s Armored Core VI, but it owned so much that I had to make this video specifically about its soundtrack. I will eventually make a video about the whole game, but please accept this in the meantime.
Runtime - 8:57
And because I was born in 1993 and turned 30 just a few weeks ago, I made this video about hidden video game gems from 1993.
Runtime - 9:00
And the last bit of video I want to talk about it actually a bunch of videos. In an effort to increase our video output while not unduly increasing our overall workload, Subpixel used 2023 to test out a couple of unscripted video segments, one of which we’re calling PLAY THIS! The goal of this series is to draw attention to games we like that we feel are under appreciated in the broader games sphere, but keep our recommendations as bite-sized as we can (ex. the shortest video in the linked playlist is 2:35, and the longest is 3:52). I like this series a lot, and I’m looking forward to making more. Share them with a videogame liker in your family!
And that’s basically it! Here’s to 2024!
